 - gothic architecture
- in middle ages, the cathedral functioned as a marketplace in various parts of the basillica
- legend says that the site had housed a tunic that belonged to the virign mary, which would have been given to the church by charlemagne
- also functioned as cathedral school in mid ages so Charlamagne could educate the french people in the 9th century since it was more affordable than building a school
