Definition
Commander-in-chief of all British forces in America at the beginning of the war. He was also governor of Massachusetts. He stationed 4000 redcoats in Boston before the war started.

A rebellion group in MA, they trained the Minute Men militia and formed an extralegal provincial assembly.

Battle of Lexington
Definition
Three months after the order had been made (in April 1775), General Gage got London orders to use troops against Massachusetts. He immediately sent a crack team to find and destroy Patriot supplies and ammunition in Lexington. Patriots organized their militia and challenged the 700 British troops. The British marched on to Concord and took the supplies.
Patriot casualties: 8.

Battle of Concord
Definition
At the Old North Bridge the British were again confronted by militiamen who forced them to yield their position. Alarmed, they began to march back to Boston. While passing through a long narrow field, they were subjected to sniper fire. It was only by Gage sending in 1500 soldiers to route out the snipers that the British got away. British casualties: 273. Patriot casualties: < 100.
