Term
Adipose tissue
Definition
- Vascularized type of connective tissue
- General fxns to protect, insulate and provide a major source of energy to the body
- Can occur as either brown or white adipose tissue
- White adipose tissue
 Found thoughout body
 Storage area for lipids
 These lipids may be used for the production of energy or ATP
- Brown adipose tissue
 Found in neonate and hibernating species
 Has its lipids converted to heat
Term
Cardiac muscle fibers
Definition
- Striated involuntary muscle found excl. in heart
- Influenced by ANS (autonomic)
- Has 1 centrally located nucleus and intercalated disks that form special connections between the muscle branches
Term
Cell membrane (mammal)
Definition
- Selectively permeable outer memb of cell
- Composed of a phospholipid bilayer, protein, and cholesterol
- Aka plasma memb or plasmalemma
Term
Ciliated epithelium
Definition
- Epithelial cells covered w/ cilia that beat rhythmically to propel mucus and other materials across the cell’s apical border
Term
Columnar epithelium
Definition
- Epi composed of columnar cells (tall, thin epi cells having nuceli located at their basal end, often ciliated)
- Elongated and closely packed together, thus thicker and more protective
- Nonciliated line length of GI tract from stomach to rectum
- Ciliated are found in uterine tubes, uterus, and sm bronchi of lungs
- Fxn: absorbtion in intestine and secretion in stomach, glands and intestines
- Ciliated cells assist w/ particle movement out of the lungs and w/ movement of the oocyte through uterine tubes
