4. Privacy and confidentiality
5. Advertising
6. Record keeping and fees
7. Training
8. Research
9. Assessment
10. Therapy
Term
Resolving ethical conflicts
Definition
Hierarchy of how you address it

1) clarify the px (is it related to the organization or laws?) and talk to the person informally, 2) go to the next up person if they won't correct it after you talk to them
Term
Competence
Definition
Use science based practices

Delegating responsibility to someone else doesn't absolve you - you are still responsible for what they do

Training is always on-going - practice within the boundaries of your competence and get training if you don't know much about an area that you will be working in

In emergencies you can provide services until a) the emergency is over and/or b) a more competent individual is available to serve
Term
Human relations
Definition
Don't develop multiple relationships with people you are in a THERAPEUTIC relationship with - it's a px because the relationship is set out to be unequal

When multiple relationships do exist try to resolve/simplify them. Take into consideration how easily you could avoid it and what the implications might be

Abandonment & Termination - terminate tx with a client without a transition plan
Term
Privacy and confidentiality
Definition
Discuss bounds a priori

Separate therapy from other relationships

Keep your records secure
Term
Advertising
Definition
You can have testimonials from former clients who aren't "vulnerable to undue influence"

Personal solicitations are NOT ok - can't go ask people to be your patient. CAN tell them you have a clinic, you see these types of kids etc...

Advertising standards - make sure it is clear if this is a paid advertisement
----APA has gotten looser on advertising b/c it has become more common to advertise for health service provision
Term
Record keeping and fees
Definition
Disclose only when necessary. Try to let the pt know before that happens and help them deal with it

Can't withhold records for non-payment in an EMERGENCY
Term
Training
Definition
Can't mandate tx for students from a faculty member, must have a non-faculty option

Oh, and don't have sex with them :)

And definitely don't have sex with them if they are your student and your client...whoa
Term
Research
Definition
Get IRB approval
Term
Assessment
Definition
Test security - keep materials, instruments, protocols, and test questions secure. Doesn't include test data

Competence and language - be competent in the assmt you give? and don't give an assmt that in a language you or the individual doesn't speak (give careful though to the use of an interpreter here too)
Term
Therapy
Definition
Don't be a predator!

When serving families, make it clear who is the pt and what bounds will be drawn

Don't date patients (or kids parents) for 2 years after termination of tx
Term
NASP code of Ethics
Definition
Generally parallel, more interest in healthy schools

Directly encourage to engage in research

How to resolve conflicts between what your employer wants and what the kid's needs are is not discussed a whole lot
Term
BACB code of ethics
Definition
Mostly the same as APA and NASP

- Talks a lot about being science based. More micro with more behavior mod language

Heavy emphasis on consent at each stage

Patients are said to have a right to effective treatment

Specifically advocates for SR+ over Punishment. <- only time a code states one tx over another

Advocates for MAXIMIZING reinforcer delivery rather than EFFECTIVE delivery in teaching.

Heavy emphasis on measurable behavior change
Term
Sheridan and Gutkin (2000) main points
Definition
Ecological model over medical model

Structure of services (don't want to be failure-based anymore - prevention, intervention, and systems change instead)

Growing needs (maybe??)

Advocate to consider broader social context of kids in case management - get the kid some glasses

Should be more involved in systems change - have to get your foot in the door by being useful/unique
Term
What is the paradox of school psychology?
Definition
We have to change adult bx to change student bx
