Constantine became emperor of Rome in A.D. 306. He claimed he hd seen a cross in the sky on which was written "In this sign conquer."

Constantine ended the persecution of Christians, but later he made it illegal to not be a Christian. This resulted in a weakening of the Church, as many unbelievers claimed to be Christians.
