The largest mountain system in Europe. Term Appennines Definition A chain of mountains that runs down the length of Italy. They are not as high as the alps and cover about two thirds of the Apennine Peninsula. To the wes of the Apennines is a broad, fertile plain, where the city of Rome is located. Term Po River Definition The longest river in Italy. It begins in the Alps and flows eastward, emptying into the Adriatic Sea. Almost all the rivers in northern Italy are branches of the Po.
